greasegunburgers: Makin Island Raid Makin, the northernmost...

greasegunburgers:

Makin Island Raid

Makin, the northernmost island in the Gilbert chain in the Pacific, was attacked on 17-18 August 1942 by a Marine Raider party from 2nd Raider Battalion. The Marines were transported there by U.S. Navy Narwahl-class submarines SS-166 USS Argonaut and SS-168 USS Nautilus. The expedition’s objective was the destruction of the Japanese seaplane base on the island.

With the submarines providing surface support fires on shore targets after sinking ships in the island’s lagoon, the Raiders destroyed the seaplane base and much of the island’s military support infrastructure before exfiling. ADM Chester Nimitz was present on the docks to welcome the Marines and crew when they pulled into Pearl Harbor.
